Protect your Pet from Mosquitoes, Fleas and Ticks in Puerto Rico

Protect your Pet from Mosquitoes, Fleas and Ticks in Puerto Rico

Living in Puerto Rico means enjoying warm weather year-round, but it also means that our pets face unique health risks that owners sometimes don't consider. Here in Caguas and throughout the island, the rainy season creates the perfect environment for parasites like mosquitoes, fleas and ticks to thrive. These little parasites are not only annoying-they can also transmit serious diseases that endanger your pet's health. That's why year-round prevention is not only recommended, but essential for dogs and cats in Puerto Rico.

Mosquito Dangers: Heartworm Disease
One of the biggest concerns for pets in Puerto Rico is heartworm disease, which is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. When an infected mosquito bites your dog, it can introduce larvae into its bloodstream. Over time, these larvae mature into worms that live in the heart and lungs, causing a serious and potentially fatal disease.

In tropical climates like ours, mosquitoes are active year-round, not just in summer. Even pets living indoors are at risk, as mosquitoes easily enter homes. The best protection is prevention, because once heartworm is present, treatment is costly, complicated and dangerous for the animal.

Fleas: More than itching

Fleas are another common threat during the rainy months in Puerto Rico. These tiny insects reproduce quickly in the warm, humid weather. A single flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day, which means an infestation can get out of control before you know it.

In addition to causing itching and discomfort, fleas can transmit tapeworms and cause anemia in small pets. They also cause flea allergic dermatitis, a condition in which pets develop painful, itchy skin reactions to flea saliva. Once fleas get a foothold in your home, eliminating them is very difficult-that's why prevention is always the best option.

Ticks: Hidden Dangers in the Tropics

Ticks thrive in Puerto Rico's climate. These parasites attach themselves to pets and feed on their blood, sometimes for several days. In doing so, they can transmit serious diseases such as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis.

Tick-borne diseases are of concern because their symptoms-lethargy, fever, joint pain-can be confused with other conditions, making diagnosis difficult without veterinary testing. A single tick bite can cause long-term health problems.

Don't Forget Indoor Cats

Many owners think that cats that never leave the house don't need the same protection as dogs or other pets. Unfortunately, that's not true. Fleas, ticks and even mosquitoes can get into your home. Unprotected cats are still at risk for diseases such as heartworm or flea infestations. For this reason, vaccination and parasite prevention are just as important for indoor cats here in Puerto Rico.

The Importance of Year-Round Prevention in Puerto Rico

Because of our tropical climate, pet owners in Puerto Rico cannot rely on "seasonal" prevention as in other cold regions. Here, fleas, ticks and mosquitoes are active every month of the year. Skipping doses or stopping preventives during the "cooler" months leaves your pet exposed.

At VETS PR in Caguas, we recommend constant protection throughout the year for all pets. Some of the options we trust and prescribe are:

- Bravecto - a chewable medication that protects against fleas and ticks for up to 12 weeks with a single dose.

-Interceptor Plus - a monthly chewable medicine that protects against heartworms and gastrointestinal parasites.

-Pro-Heart 12 - an injection to prevent heartworm for one year.
- Simparica Trio - a monthly chew that protects dogs against fleas, ticks and heartworm, making it a convenient all-in-one solution.
