Hurricane Preparedness Guide for Dog and Cat Owners in Puerto Rico

Hurricane Preparedness Guide for Dog and Cat Owners in Puerto Rico

Hurricane season in Puerto Rico runs from June to November, and while many families prepare their homes and vehicles, it’s also important to prepare their pets.

At VETS PR in Caguas, Puerto Rico, we recommend that pet owners prepare an emergency plan in advance.

Put Together an Emergency Kit for Your Pet
Include enough food and water to last one or two weeks, medications, medical records, leashes, collars, and carriers.

Keep Your Pet's Identification Up to Date
Make sure your dog or cat has an up-to-date ID tag. We also recommend microchipping.

Have an Evacuation Plan
If authorities recommend evacuating, never leave your pets behind.

Be Aware of Post-Storm Hazards
Floodwaters, debris, and damaged structures can pose dangers to pets.

Recognize a Veterinary Emergency
Seek immediate veterinary care if your pet is vomiting, has diarrhea, is having trouble breathing, has injuries, or is dehydrated.
