Heatstroke in Puerto Rico: What You Need to Know to Protect Your Pet

High temperatures and humidity in Puerto Rico create very dangerous conditions for pets throughout the year. That's why dogs, cats, and exotic pets are at greater risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. At VETS PR, our veterinary team frequently treats heat-related emergencies, many of which are completely preventable.

Heatstroke occurs when an animal's internal temperature rises faster than its body can regulate. Dogs rely almost entirely on panting to cool themselves, but in a humid climate like ours, this mechanism becomes less effective. Cats show more subtle signs, which means their owners detect the problem later. Exotic pets, such as rabbits, have very low heat tolerance.

Early Symptoms

Early signs include excessive panting, restlessness, red gums, salivation, and seeking cool places. In Puerto Rico's tropical climate, these symptoms can progress rapidly.

Advanced Symptoms

As the condition worsens, vomiting, collapse, staggering, or weakness may occur. The gums may become pale or purple. Without urgent veterinary care, organ failure may occur.

High-Risk Situations in Puerto Rico

  • Midday walks
  • Power outages affecting fans or air conditioning
  • Pets that live outside without shade
  • Dogs left inside vehicles
  • Hot surfaces such as asphalt or concrete

Short-snouted breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and Shih Tzus are at extreme risk.

What to Do Immediately

Take your pet to a cool or air-conditioned area. Apply cool water to its paws and body. Offer it small sips of water. Do not use ice or cold baths. Seek veterinary care at VETS PR as soon as possible; our hospital in Caguas is open 24 hours a day.

Prevention in Puerto Rico

  • Exercise your pet early in the morning or at dusk.
  • Keep fresh water available
  • Avoid walking on hot asphalt.
  • Ensure good ventilation in the home.
  • Keep an eye on older or overweight pets

Heatstroke is one of the most preventable emergencies. Awareness, quick response, and immediate veterinary care at VETS PR can save lives.
