The 4th of July is approaching and many families in Puerto Rico are ready for a weekend full of BBQ, fireworks and celebrations. But while for us it's a reason to party, for our dogs and kitties it can be a nightmare full of scares and anxiety.
As your trusted veterinarian at Vets PR, we want to help you keep your pet safe, calm and protected throughout the holiday.
Here are some important tips to help your furry companion spend the 4th of July stress-free:
1. Don't leave it to the last minute - Ask early for a refill of anxiety medication
Many dogs and cats are terrified of loud noises, and fireworks are one of the worst triggers. If your pet needs anxiety medication, don't wait - call your veterinarian now to ask for it.
At Vets PR, we always get a lot of last minute calls, so plan ahead so your pet is not left unprotected when it needs it most.
Verify the microchip - and make sure it is registered with your info.
With loud noises, even the quietest pets get scared and may run away. The 4th of July is one of the most lost pet days in Puerto Rico.
Make sure your dog or cat is microchipped and registered with your current information.
Your pet doesn't have a chip? Ask your veterinarian - it's fast, safe and can be the difference between losing him or having him back home.
3. Create a quiet space inside the house.
Even if your dog or cat is usually outside, it's best to keep him inside that day. Find a quiet room, without many windows or open doors, and put his bed, water, toys or something that makes him feel at home.
You can play soft music or turn on the TV to hide the noise of the fireworks.
If your pet is very nervous, consider using a kennel or an enclosed space where he feels safer - your veterinarian can tell you what is best for his personality.
4. Beware of hidden holiday dangers
The 4th of July doesn't just bring fireworks - there are also a lot of things that can be dangerous for your pet:
Do not feed BBQ leftovers. Foods such as bones, onions, chocolate and alcohol can be toxic.
Put away glow sticks, matches, fireworks and anything flammable.
Make sure guests don't leave doors or gates open - we don't want your pet to escape.
